How do you know when your knees are so bad they need to be replaced? I could go on using NSAIDs, Glucosamine,

calcium and magnesium supplementation with MSN etc. my triceps to lift me from sitting, leg extensions to strengthen the quads to hold knee joints steady, rest a lot, have steroid and Supartz injections every year, etc. But, really, maybe I’ve passed the law of diminishing returns? Have you had knee replacement surgery ? Recommend ?
Can we ever run hard again ??????
BTW: AM 64 y/o male 225 lbs (too much, am dieting) fairly active & working out……)

How do you get a good cardio workout when you have two bad knees?

I have no cartilege (degenerative joint disease) in both knees I am 35 yrs old and used to exercise daily. Pain keeps me from exercising now and it also makes arthritis worse if you DONT exercise. Any suggestions? Knee replacement is NOT an option for me at this point in my life. They are only good for 10 years (is my understanding) I can’t afford the gym and can’t access an indoor pool. PLEASE HELP.

Knee replacement on one or both knees?

Has anyone here had total knee replacement on one or both knees ( as this one has been advised to do)?
How long did it take to recover? were you able to go back to the activities you were doing prior to the surgery?
What degree of joint flexibility did you regain after the surgery?
This one practices aikido and would only have surgery if he could continue to do so after the surgery.

All serious answers will be appreciated and all assistance will be gratefully accepted.

may you be well.
This one is soon to be 56 yrs. of age, non-smoker, heavily muscled (former power lifter and bodybuilder) weighing around 195 lbs. with 6.9 % body fat.

Limits due to the current problems are related to lateral movements (no stability), flexation pain and pain in all possible positions with rising after sitting, both formal and in a western chair are difficult, getting up from the bed (sleeping traditionally on a futon) is sometimes problematic, etc.

Very good and most welcomed advise from all. This one thanks you all sincerely.

abdyeshua, thank you for applying your experience in aikido to the question and the answer you offered. If it possible, this one will ask the Dr.s to attend a class or visit another dojo more in their area so that they may acess what this one needs to be able to do.

Licensed P.T., thank you for your expertize. Very much appreciation.

Thank you to the other for your first hand experience which is always best as you have “walked the walk”.
